Borland Adds i-mode Support to Worldwide Mobile Application Development for Java

(November 20, 2003) - Borland JBuilder Mobile Development for i-mode, designed to accelerate the development of mobile applications for i-mode service outside of Japan, is available now. Included in JBuilder X, and ready to download without charge for existing JBuilder 9 customers, JBuilder Mobile Development for i-mode integrates JBuilder and the NTT DoCoMo Doja 1.5 Overseas Edition SDK emulator, providing a Java-based development platform for General Packet Radio Service (GPRS)(1) based i-mode application developers worldwide.

Launched in 1999 by NTT DoCoMo, Inc. in Japan, i-mode is designed to provide wireless Internet access that not only allows mobile users to browse the Internet and check e-mail, but also receive online services such as shopping, banking and ticket reservations.

i-mode has grown to service more than 40 million subscribers in Japan and one million outside Japan, making it one the largest mobile Internet services in the world. Today, i-mode offers diverse content through more than 73,600 i-mode compatible sites in Japan and a growing number of English sites overseas. E-Plus in Germany, KPN Mobile in the Netherlands, BASE in Belgium, Bouygues Telecom in France, Telefonica Moviles Espana in Spain, Wind Telecomunicazioni in Italy, COSMOTE Mobile Telecommunications in Greece and KG Telecom of Taiwan are members of i-mode alliance.

The use of Java has made it possible for i-mode developers to create more robust applications with enhanced features such as dynamic content transmission, high-speed multimedia capabilities and advanced security functions. This has created a variety of new services for both consumers and enterprises, including real-time stock updates, map search, online game, and other transaction-based mobile applications.

Borland JBuilder is a leading development environment for building enterprise applications for the Java platform. The integration of JBuilder with support for Java-enabled i-mode phones is designed to streamline the mobile application development lifecycle and reduce the complexity associated with mobile application development, enabling developers to create better mobile applications for Java, faster.

Borland JBuilder Mobile Development for i-mode is immediately available as a download without charge to current JBuilder 9 Enterprise, JBuilder 9 Developer, Borland JBuilder 9 Mobile Edition, Borland Mobile Studio, Borland Enterprise Studio for Mobile, and Borland Enterprise Studio for Java users.
