Search Engine Optimization (SEO) for Microsoft Silverlight

I had a great time today in my Mix2010 session on SEO for Silverlight.
You can find all the slides (more than I was able to cover in the talk) here. and the the full play-by-play of the demo (include a link to the completed solution). I started off talking why SEO matters. You can view the site live by using Bing for “my foodie Explorer Cooking Class with Joe..” or the other guys search engine equally well. ;-)

Silverlight 4 + RIA Services: Updating Data in the Client

To continue our series, let’s look at updating the data. I have created a Plates.xaml page with very similar structure to the above. For details on how I created this page, check out my PDC 09 demo walk through.
Now let’s look at updating the Plate data..
First we will create some default “form” UI by dragging an entity from the datasources window in much the same way we did above. But before we create the UI, notice the order of the fields – it matches the order they will be generated in the UI. They are in alphabetic order, but that is not always what you want. For example, I think Name should be first.

Open Source Alternatives to LiveCycle Data Services

Development of enterprise Flex/Java rich Internet applications benefits from using automated data integration solutions and productivity tools.

Currently Adobe offers LiveCycle Data Services ES2 (LCDS) and open source BlazeDS 3.

While LCDS is certainly a great piece of software for those who are looking to support thousands concurrent users via the most efficient communication protocols, its high licensing cost makes LCDS not affordable for the vast majority of the enterprise applications let alone small businesses and startups.

Silverlight 4 + RIA Services: Exposing Data from Entity Framework

To continue our series I wanted to look next at how to expose your data from the server side of your application.
The interesting data in your business applications come from a wide variety of data sources. From a SQL Database, from Oracle DB, from Sql Azure, from Sharepoint, from a mainframe and you have likely already chosen a datamodel such as NHibernate, Linq2Sql, Entity Framework, Stored Proc, a service. The goal of RIA Service in this release is to make it easy to work with data from any (or many) of the sources in a seamless way from a Silverlight application. This walk through will use Entity Framework accessing the Sql Express database, but the basic concept applies to any data source.
Add DishView.mdf to BusinessApplication1.Web\App_Data – Of course in a real world example, you’d just have a connection string to an existing database.
Then create an Entity Framework model on top of it.

Silverlight 4 + RIA: Starting a New Project with the Business App Template

To kick off our series, I wanted to focus on our goal of helping you focus on your business, not plumbing code. The first place you will see this in the pre-build components in the Business Application Template. It describes a prescriptive application structure, looks great and is easily customizable.
After you have successfully installed Silverlight 4 for developers (which includes RIA Services) you will have a couple of new projects in the Silverlight section. We are going to focus on the Business Application Template.
Notice this creates a single solution with two projects. BusinessApplication1 is the client part of the application and BusinessApplication2 is the server part. These are related projects that know about each other.

Silverlight 4 + RIA Services - Ready for Business: Index

With Silverlight 4 and RIA Services all but done, I thought it would be worthwhile to highlight some of the key features of the platform and tools that make Silverlight a fantastic platform for building business applications. I’ll avoid gratuitous video and dancing hippos and focus on just the bread and butter of business applications: Querying, Updating, Validating and securing your important business-data. I’ll also use this to refresh a few of the posts from my Silverlight 3 era series.

HTML5 Web Sockets: A Quantum Leap in Scalability for the Web

Lately there has been a lot of buzz around HTML5 Web Sockets, which defines a full-duplex communication channel that operates through a single socket over the Web. HTML5 Web Sockets is not just another incremental enhancement to conventional HTTP communications; it represents a colossal advance, especially for real-time, event-driven web applications.
HTML5 Web Sockets provides such a dramatic improvement from the old, convoluted "hacks" that are used to simulate a full-duplex connection in a browser that it prompted Google’s Ian Hickson – the HTML5 specification lead – to say:
“Reducing kilobytes of data to 2 bytes…and reducing latency from 150ms to 50ms is far more than marginal. In fact, these two factors alone are enough to make Web Sockets seriously interesting to Google.”
Let’s look at how HTML5 Web Sockets can offer such an incredibly dramatic reduction of unnecessary network traffic and latency by comparing it to conventional solutions.

Southwark Council To Put Interactive Mapping At The Heart of Online Community Services With Pitney Bowes Business Insight

Stratus Connect™ Helping To Transform Online User Experience

Windsor, Berks UK, 11 March 2010 - Pitney Bowes Business Insight (PBBI) - a global provider of location intelligence, data management and customer communication management software, data and services - today announces that Southwark Council in London is using PBBI's web mapping technology Stratus Connect™ to significantly enhance the mapping services provided to citizens via the Council's website, delivering the type of seamless and intuitive user experience that online citizens have come to expect from the Web 2.0 world.

Known as Southwark Interactive Mapping, the citizen services provided via Stratus Connect can be launched through www.southwark.gov.uk/YourServices/maps

Southwark Council is overhauling its online mapping features in two key areas. The first is to provide a dedicated one-stop-shop interactive mapping service that enables citizens to activate overlays on top of a detailed map of the borough - for example, clicking on 'Controlled parking zones' instantly highlights the relevant areas on the map. Other overlay options include 'Schools', 'Recycling Sites', 'Planning Applications' and 'Conservation Areas'. Citizens are also able to: search for locations; browse mapping, aerial photography and historical mapping; and quickly display nearby services.

To directly view the full functionality of Southwark Interactive Mapping, go to http://maps.southwark.gov.uk/connect/southwark.jsp?tooltip=yes

The second key area for Southwark is its plans to make location and mapping functionality widely available throughout the website - for instance, the council plans to enable citizens to launch spatial searches and address look-ups from multiple service pages throughout the council website. The RIA (Rich Internet Application) controls that Stratus Connect supports via Stratus RIA Controls™ will enable individual web page managers to incorporate mapping and spatial search functionality wherever it's needed.

Stratus Connect replaces the PlanAccess solution that the Council was previously using for public access to geographic-based information, in recognition that user expectations of interactive mapping have changed enormously over the past few years. Stratus Connect enables the type of uncluttered interface and simple zoom and pan functionality that users are accustomed to from web tools such as Bing Maps and Google Maps - but importantly, Stratus Connect delivers a number of advantages over mapping services available online.

"We wanted to put mapping at the heart of the Southwark Council website, as it's a key indicator that we understand how citizens today want to interact with online environments," said Stuart Carter, Corporate GIS Manager at Southwark Council. "Stratus Connect enables us to simplify and streamline the way we present location-based information to users, removing extraneous on-screen map tools and instead providing an intuitive interface that enables people to find what they want without having to go through unnecessary steps. However, while it's clear that online tools such as Bing Maps and Google Maps have done a lot to popularise easy-access mapping, there's a number of reasons why we resisted deploying them onto the council website.

"Services such as Google Maps are fantastic for private business websites, but not so good for local government organisations that have a responsibility to build and maintain a spatial data infrastructure (SDI). For instance, you can't use Ordnance Survey (OS) MasterMap with the Google Maps API as this would breach Crown copyright, thus denying Southwark's citizens access to the level of detail provided by OS MasterMap. Moreover, if we deployed an external mapping API such as Google Maps, we'd have little control over developments within it - for example, the style of the mapping or administrative functions could change without us being consulted."

Southwark chose to work with PBBI on this project because of a longstanding relationship with the company based on its heritage as a location intelligence expert and innovator.

"PBBI is a company who we trust to provide both excellent solutions and support," added Stuart Carter. "Southwark Council's relationship with PBBI means that I can be involved in the ongoing evolution of products and provide honest and frank feedback that I know will be acted upon."

Southwark Council is overhauling its online mapping presence in tandem with a re-launch of the council website during 2010. It is hoped that the new user-friendly, location-based information on its pages will encourage citizens to interact even further with the online services that Southwark provides.

Based on the expected success of the Stratus Connect deployment, the Council is anticipating a considerable improvement in visitor numbers compared to the old PlanAccess based service.

About Stratus Connect™
Stratus Connect is designed for spatial data owners and web developers within organisations who need to share corporate data with citizens, councillors and wider stakeholders through a web-based mapping application to provide live information about the location of services in any given vicinity. Stratus Connect can be used internally or externally to promote efficiencies and cost savings with the benefit of an enhanced citizen experience and self-service capabilities.

Stratus Connect has been developed in direct response for the need to deliver next generation interactive maps on-line. Web technology has evolved to enable online mapping and provide more feature rich and compelling applications. As location intelligence moves from the single-user to the enterprise, Stratus Connect provides Web 2.0 mapping capabilities and RIA controls for enterprise mash-ups.

End.

For further information, please contact:
Sue Glanville/Joe Banks
Say Communications
+44 (0)20 8971 6400
sglanville@saycomms.co.uk
jbanks@saycomms.co.uk

About Pitney Bowes Business Insight
Pitney Bowes Business Insight (PBBI) is a division of Pitney Bowes Inc.
Cisco CRS-3: Foundation for the Next Generation Internet

The public Internet has dramatically evolved since its inception. Likewise, so has the upward limit of expectations for IP Next Generation Network (IP NGN) infrastructure to power it.

When the Internet was founded in the 1960’s, its designers were focused on building a robust, fault-tolerant and distributed computer network for the military, scientists and research institutes. Even in their sci-fi dreams, they likely didn’t think of TelePresence or iPhones or seemingly infinite amounts of video running over the network…but that’s just what happened. Now, even the notion of looking at the Internet as a key for basic communications, such as email, is antiquated in favor of rich media applications for our Connected Lives (...and to think that the email and basic web-centric view was just over 10 years ago). I can still quite easily recall being excited over a 56.6 modem and thinking it was blazing fast, and I’m not that old! (No comments from the gallery on my age, please!)

While the use of the network has changed dramatically, so too must the technology and architecture used to support it.

One thing that hasn’t changed throughout these changes though is Cisco’s perspective that Service Providers are instrumental in making these new experiences happen. At Cisco, we want to develop new technology that enables these providers to deliver the services that power economies, promote creativity, and fundamentally change how we are able to work, live, learn and play…and to that end, I’m pleased to announce that once again, we are doing just that.

Imaginable: Planning for New Experiences
Today, the service provider’s ability to deliver more of the branded, rich, integrated experiences - rather than just basic access - will be essential in their transformation from service providers to experience providers.

The key to this transformation involves building the capabilities to deliver applications and services on a robust infrastructure designed in anticipation of the future - knowing that it’s somewhat unpredictable.

The limitation, however, with the networks today is that they are designed to scale only in the predictable core to subscriber direction, and not in the data center to data center direction.

Therefore, merely increasing network platform component-level capacity would be short-sighted because the shift in traffic patterns also dictates the requirement for an architectural solution.

Introducing the Cisco CRS-3: Unmatched Scalability & Supporting Multi-Directional Patterns
Cisco’s answer to this challenge comes in the form of the CRS-3, our new flagship platform and quite simply, the industry’s most powerful, most capable, and more efficient core router ever created.

Telx Selected as Connectivity Partner by SoftLayer

Telx, an interconnection and colocation provider in strategic North American markets, on Monday announced that it has been selected as a connectivity partner by SoftLayer, a global provider of on-demand data center, hosting, and cloud services. SoftLayer has established a Point-of-Presence (POP) within Telx's secure, connection-rich colocation facilities in Atlanta and New York City, enabling secure, reliable delivery of services across several key U.S. cities at an accelerated market entry schedule.

In any given market, there are probably 10 or more providers that we could have gone to, especially in a place like New York or Atlanta," said George Karidis, chief strategy officer at SoftLayer. "We looked for the best provider that had the right cost structure, the right flexibility and the right amount of connectivity. Telx was that provider. Today, our customers can directly tap into our infrastructure on a guaranteed, high-speed connection without going over the public Internet. The Telx solution provides high redundancy, security, and limitless scalability."

As a connectivity partner, Telx delivers a secure, connection-rich environment from which SoftLayer can offer low-latency access to its applications and network infrastructure. A customer in Atlanta, for example, can connect to a SoftLayer data center in Dallas, Seattle, or Washington DC, through either a VPN or Metro-LAN connection. The Telx interconnection replaces the need for a public Internet connection, ensuring that the network is more secure, latency is reduced, quality of service is enhanced and the number of hops is minimized. This empowers SoftLayer's customers to optimize application performance, while keeping SoftLayer's market entry speed high and operational costs low.
